What type of cage bird is most suitable?
The smaller the bird, generally, the cheaper it is and the easier it is to keep.
Finches
Finches are small seed-eating song birds, found in the wild in many different parts of the world. There are many different species of finches, and so there is a wide variety of appearances. Finches enjoy company and are best kept in mixed groups.
Species kept as pets include Rainbow Buntings, Goldfinches, Zebra Finches, Gouldian Finches and Waxbills. Most finches live for 5 – 12 years.
Canary
Similar to Finches and originally from the Canary Islands, Canaries are also small seed-eating song birds. There are over 40 different breeds of canary to choose from, mostly yellow or green, but there are also red, pink and orange varieties.
It is the male canary who sings, so males are usually more expensive. Canaries can be kept alone but they are probably better in pairs or groups.
Female canaries live for 5 - 6 years, whereas some males can live as old as 16 years.
Budgerigar
Budgerigars live in large flocks in the wild in Australia. Bred in captivity for many years, and they make very good pets. There are now many different varieties, with all sorts of different colours available.
Budgies are best kept in groups of two or more. They can be kept in ones if you are prepared to give them lots of attention - otherwise they can be become lonely.
Budgies live for 5 – 10 years
Cockatiel
Cockatiels live in flocks in the wild in Australia, are slightly bigger than budgies, and are easily recognised by the crest of feathers which sprout from the top of their heads. Both sexes make good pets, and you can mix sexes with no problem.
Cockatiels enjoy company, so are usually best kept in pairs or groups. If they are kept in ones they require lots of attention to keep them from becoming bored.
Cockatiels live for 12 - 14 years.
Lovebird
Originally from Africa Lovebirds are a type of small parrot. Breeders have produced many different varieties of lovebird. They spend a long time grooming each other, hence the name 'lovebird.'
They are best kept in pairs.

There are many, many different types of parrots. Originating from tropical countries all over the world, Parrots are now commonly kept as pets. Common pet species include African Grey Parrots, Amazon Parrots, Ring Neck Parrots and Macaws. They are fine birds but they are expensive, need lots of space and are difficult to keep.
Parrots can be kept as single birds. The average life span is 40 – 80 years
