New filters lack waste-removing bacteria, which can lead to pollution of aquarium water with harmful ammonia and nitrite. TOP TEN TIPS TO A HEALTHY AQUARIUM

1. Never clean the filter media in tap water - always use old aquarium water. Cleaning the filter media in tap water can result in the bacteria being killed - but the bacteria is needed to help the break down of the nitrogen cycle. 2. Never over feed your fish. Guide to starting out with a new aquarium

When setting up an aquarium we recommend you have a fish tank with a filter system and not just a bowl. Most fish tanks nowadays come with the filter, pump and heater already in them but if they don't all these products can be bought at The Giant Pet Store. If you just buy the fish tank get a pump that will turn over all the water in the tank at least 7 times an hour.
