Your new puppy has plenty of growing to do and for this his body will need to manufacture muscle, bone, hair, teeth and a strong immune system - all in double quick time!
Naturally he'll need the best nutrition there is to get there.
Feeding your Puppy
For the first ten days or so of a puppy's life it will suckle feed almost continuously. At 6 weeks old a puppy will be ready to leave his mother and by this time it should be on solid food.
Puppies need feeding little and often. Up to 3 months of age they will require feeding 4 times a day and from 3-6 months they should have three meals daily. From six months they should have 2 meals daily until they are fully grown, which is usually around 12 months of age.
Adult dogs can be given one full meal each day but you may prefer to feed half the dogs daily requirement in the morning and the other half in the evening.
For growing puppies any good quality commercial puppy food is fine, whether it is a tinned meat with biscuit or a complete dried food.
It is not necessary to supplement the diet, for example with milk or breakfast cereal, as this may cause stomach upsets.
Many vets recommend Hills Puppy Healthy Development for puppies as it is nutritionally balanced and provides everything a growing puppy will need.
If you puppy is a large breed the dietary requirements will be different and feeding the wrong diet could lead to problems with bone formation. Specially formulated diets are available for large breed puppies such as Eukanuba Puppy Large Breed.
Once your dog is fully grown any good quality commercial dog food will be fine. However, specialist maintenance diets such as those by Hills Science Plan, Eukanuba, James Wellbeloved or Purina Pro-Plan are highly recommended.
