The UK Kennel Club recognizes 202 breeds of dog but there are over 450 breeds of dogs worldwide so choosing a dog is not an easy task. Firstly we suggest you speak to some experienced breeders and vets to help you choose what type of breed you would like. Also visit a local dog show or Crufts where every breed of dog is on show with their owners. Types of questions you should ask when choosing a breed of dog:
• How big will the dog grow to?
• What is the average lifespan for the breed of dog you are looking at?
• How much
exercise does the particular dog breed require?
• Is that breed prone to certain
illnesses or health problems?• What is the breed of dog generally used for?
• Is the breed considered sociable towards people and other animals?
• Does the breed require much
grooming?• Is the breed
energetic and playful?• Is the breed easy to train or is it headstrong?
When you have narrowed down your choice of breed of dog you then need to ask yourself some serious questions. Remember if buying a puppy, pedigree puppies are more likely to turn out like the breed standard, i.e. looks and temperament, than a cross breed; but pure breed dogs tend to have a shorter lifespan than cross breeds and cost more money to buy initially.
• Can you afford to buy the dog?
