Setting up a Biorb

Guide to starting out with a new biorb

Setting up a Biorb
The Reef One Biorb’s and Biube’s are complete aquariums that come with filter, pump and media. They are also amongst the easiest aquariums to maintain. All of them, except the 30 litre Biorb, come with a light.

You must use the ceramic media that is provided with the Biorbs. The ceramic media provides essential biological filtration. Putting normal gravel or sand in the Biorb can block filtration and can become lodged in the filter cartridge casing.

Once you have purchased your Reef One Biorb or Biube and checked it for leaks you can then start to set it up. Place the aquarium where it is out of direct sunlight and away from a heat source, place the washed media in the bottom, fill it with conditioned water (to condition the water use the sachet provided with the aquarium), turn on the Pump and light and leave the filter and water to mature for at least two weeks. Although you can introduced fish after 24 hours it is actually safer for the fish if you wait until the tank has been setup at least two weeks, before introducing fish. This is to let the water go through an natural process called the nitrogen cycle.
You can put fish in after 24 hours but you are putting them at risk of stress and disease, and they stand more chance of survival if the water is established.
Plants can be added after the first 24 hours.

Once you start to introduce your fish then you will need to start doing small regular water changes - 2 to 3 inches every two weeks; and replace with conditioned tap water that has been standing 24 hours at room temperature.
The Reef One Service Kit will need to be replaced every four to six weeks.

TOP TEN TIPS TO A HEALTHY AQUARIUM

1. Never clean the filter media in tap water - always use old aquarium water. Cleaning the filter media in tap water can result in the bacteria being killed - but the bacteria is needed to help the break down of the nitrogen cycle. 2. Never over feed your fish. Depending on the size of your fish feed them a maximum of twice a day. Feed just enough for all the food to be consumed in 5 minutes. Any left over feed can result in poor water quality. 3. Always do 20% water change every two weeks with conditioned tap water. Make sure the conditioned tap water has been stood for 24 hours with More on this >

Guide to starting out with a new aquarium

When setting up an aquarium we recommend you have a fish tank with a filter system and not just a bowl. Most fish tanks nowadays come with the filter, pump and heater already in them but if they don't all these products can be bought at The Giant Pet Store. If you just buy the fish tank get a pump that will turn over all the water in the tank at least 7 times an hour. For example a Tetratec Air Pump APS400 can move between 200litres to 400litres of water per hour so it is suitable for aquariums up to a 60 litres. If you are hoping to stock tropical fish in your aquarium and it doesn’t come with a heater you also need to buy one. The Tetratec HT range of heaters are reliable and easy to use and come in various sizes to suit the size of your aquarium....
