TOP TEN TIPS TO A HEALTHY AQUARIUM

Aquarium Health Tips
1. Never clean the Aquarium Filter Media in tap water. Always use old aquarium water. Cleaning the media in tap water can result in the bacteria being killed, the bacteria is needed to help the break down of the nitrogen cycle.

2. Never over feed your fish. Depending on the size of your fish you should feed them a maximum of twice a day. Feed just enough for all the food to be consumed in 5 minutes. Any left over food can result in poor water quality.

3. Always do a 20% water change every two weeks with conditioned tap water. Make sure the conditioned tap water has been stood for 24 hours with Seachem Prime before doing a water change.

4. Use Seachem Stability monthly to encourage good water quality. Seachem Stability puts good bacteria into the aquarium.

5. If possible always have a pair of Ancistrus and a few Ammano Shrimps to keep the algae down.

6. You are keeping the water not the fish. Monitor the water quality weekly for No2 Nitrite – 0- PH – 7 (neutral) Nitrates up to 50mgl.

7. Never place your aquarium in direct sunlight due to temperature fluctuations, it can also provoke algae growth.

8. Never introduce too many fish at any one time and always acclimatise the fish properly as instructed.

9. Always introduce the fish in a newly established aquarium appropriately at correct intervals.

Guide to starting out with a new aquarium

When setting up an aquarium we recommend you have a fish tank with a filter system and not just a bowl. Most fish tanks nowadays come with the filter, pump and heater already in them but if they don't all these products can be bought at The Giant Pet Store. If you just buy the fish tank get a pump that will turn over all the water in the tank at least 7 times an hour. For example a Tetratec Air Pump APS400 can move between 200litres to 400litres of water per hour so it is suitable for aquariums up to a 60 litres. If you are hoping to stock tropical fish in your aquarium and it doesn’t come with a heater you also need to buy one. The Tetratec HT range of heaters are reliable and easy to use and come in various sizes to suit the size of your aquarium....
